The ladies learned an important thing today. It was cold as hades today and most players rightfully complained. For Laura Davies, it provided an opportunity. Davies did not complain. "We all played in the same cold." Her only complaint was one of optimism. When her ball on 18 landed in the rough taking a very bad hop sending Davies back to the tee, she birdied the hole taking a six after the penalty. There was the lesson. Davies saw Juli Inkster eagled the 18th taking her to minus three on the day good for a tie for second along with Maria McBride. In the end, Davies said the course did not suit her game but with more poor weather coming in the next two days of the tournament, no matter how much you layer up, if you want to win the Old National Tournament held at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick Resort, bring your A game. Maria McBride of Sweden rode her a game to the tune of three straight birdies on holes five through seven before playing even golf the rest of the way with 3 more birdies were sprinkled with three bogeys good enough for a three under 69.
Seven time major champion Juli Inkster played the first 16 holes two under before a bogey on 17 made her one under for the day. Then came the eagle. Inkster was on the par five in two and rolled in an eagle putt to put her one stroke back of Davies who looked to be in cruise control as the round went along but a three shot swing on the last hole put both McBride and Inkster one shot behind Davies.
